Can you get a loan while under debt review?
Generally, no. Once you apply for debt review, a flag is placed on your credit profile and registered credit providers may not give you new credit until you receive a clearance certificate. Offers of 'loans for people under debt review' should be treated with suspicion. The realistic route is to finish the restructured plan, or pay off all but your home loan, and get the clearance certificate from your debt counsellor.
What lenders check
- The debt review flag on your credit report
- Whether a clearance certificate (Form 19) has been issued
- Your affordability once the flag is lifted
Documents you'll need
- Clearance certificate from your debt counsellor
- Green barcoded ID or smart ID card
- Latest 3 months' bank statements
- Latest payslip (if employed)
- Proof of address not older than 3 months
Watch out for
- Lending to someone under debt review can be 'reckless credit' — the lender risks losing the right to collect.
- Never pay someone to 'remove' a debt review flag; only your counsellor can issue clearance.
- If you withdraw from debt review before a court order, the flag can be removed, but creditors may resume collection.
How long does debt review last?
Typically 3 to 5 years, depending on how much you owe and what you can afford each month.
Can I exit debt review early?
Yes, if you settle all short-term debts (a home loan can remain), your counsellor must issue a clearance certificate.
Who can I complain to?
The National Credit Regulator on 0860 627 627, or the Debt Counselling Association.
Can I still get a home loan after debt review?
Yes. Once cleared, lenders assess you normally, though some want to see a period of clean payments.
