SASSA loans: what grant recipients should know
SASSA itself does not give loans. Some registered lenders consider an old age or disability grant as income for a small loan, but child support grants are rarely accepted. Importantly, no lender may keep your SASSA card or PIN, or deduct repayments directly from your grant — report anyone who asks to SASSA and the NCR.
What lenders check
- Type of grant (older persons and disability grants are most often considered)
- Grant history on your bank statements
- Your other income and debts
Documents you'll need
- ID document
- SASSA grant confirmation letter
- 3 months' bank statements showing grant payments
- Proof of address
Watch out for
- Never hand over your SASSA card or PIN.
- Borrowing against a grant can leave you short for basic needs — borrow only what you can repay.
- Loan sharks (unregistered 'mashonisa') charge illegal interest.
Does SASSA give loans?
No. SASSA pays grants only. Anyone claiming to offer 'SASSA loans' on SASSA's behalf is not legitimate.
Can I get a loan with a child support grant?
Very few registered lenders accept it, because the grant is meant for the child.
Where do I report someone holding my card?
Call the SASSA toll-free line (0800 60 10 11) or the NCR on 0860 627 627.
