Loan apps: staying safe
A loan app is simply a lender's application process on your phone. The same rules apply as for any lender: it must be registered with the National Credit Regulator, show its NCRCP number, check your affordability and give you a pre-agreement quote. Be very careful of apps that demand access to your contacts or photos — some illegal apps use these to shame borrowers.
What lenders check
- NCR registration number
- Your identity and bank details
- Affordability and credit record
Documents you'll need
- ID document
- Bank statements (often via secure online link)
- Selfie for identity verification
Watch out for
- Refuse apps that want access to your contacts or photo gallery.
- Download only from official app stores and check reviews.
- Never pay an upfront fee to 'unlock' a loan.
How do I check if a loan app is legal?
Search the lender's name or NCRCP number on the NCR's registered credit providers list.
Are loan apps cheaper?
Not necessarily. The same legal caps apply; compare total repayable.
What if an app harasses me?
Report it to the NCR on 0860 627 627.
